OUGD505: Design Production 2 - Studio Brief 2: An Exhibition of Beer Culture Module Evaluation

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout the Design Production 2 module I believe I have developed my skills in research, particularly during studio brief one in which we were asked to collect a vast array of written and visual research in response to a subject of our choice.

Using this research that I had gathered I was then able to refine it in order to create a 16-page publication that informed the audience of our subject. This research also became to a point of reference in order to inform the design decisions made for the publication.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

In terms of method of production, during the Design Production 2 I have developed my crafting skills, which I personally believe, have vastly improved since the beginning of the module.

One of the mandatories for the first studio brief was a packaging solution for the publication we were asked to produce, by experimenting with nets during the development stages of the brief I was able to practice and thereby improve my skills to ultimately produce a net I was proud of.

I then further improved my crafting skills during the second studio brief of the module by producing a range of printed outcomes in response to my set brief including packaging.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Throughout the Design Production 2 module I believe my strengths have been in time management, particularly during the second studio brief we were given.

Despite having several briefs on-going during the course of the second studio brief I personally believe I managed my time on each brief well.

By producing a visual identity for my beer festival early on during the course of the brief I therefore had more time to apply this to a range of considered deliverable and produce professional photographs of the final outcomes, which is something I have not had time to do in previous briefs.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

Throughout the Design Production 2 module I believe my weaknesses have been in experimentation of media.

For each of the three studio briefs, particularly studio brief one and two I have relied on digital software such as Illustrator and Indesign in order to produce my final outcomes despite this being a medium I am not confident in.

Although I happy that I have hopefully improved my skills in digital software during the course of the module in future, when producing outcomes for set briefs I would like to experiment more with hand-rendered media in order to produce something which is true to my design preferences and style.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1.     Experimentation into production methods for final outcomes
2.     Improve professional quality of final outcomes
3.     Experiment with more digital solutions to the problem as well as printed solutions
4.     Do more variations of design solutions during the developmental stages of the brief
5.     Improve motivation to during the research aspect of the design process

OUGD505: Design Production 2 - Studio Brief 2: An Exhibition of Beer Culture Final Outcomes

During the course of this second studio brief in particular I believe I managed my time quite well, meaning I had time at the end of the brief to photograph my final outcomes professionally which is something I have not had time to do before. Therefore I decided to take advantage of this by photographing within a context - on the grass in the park - which is appropriate for my beer festival.

Evaluation:

The concept of the beer festival, Knee's Up which I proposed to create in response to studio brief two was a celebration of beer and beer culture within this country.

In order to create a strong visual and conceptual identity for the beer festival which would theoretically would be recognised across the country and could be applied to a variety of formats a media I reflected this in the branding I produced, using a simple yet effective vector illustration to convey 'bunting' something which is commonly associated with a british celebration.

Once I had decided on a visual identity for the event I was then able to apply this to a range of appropriate and considered formats and mock-ups which meant I was not only creating a brand for the event but also throughout the course of the brief I was able to strengthen my skills in a range of areas such as crafting when producing the packaging for the food products and software skills when producing mock-ups.

Although I am happy with the professional quality of the final outcomes I have produced in response to the brief, I would have like to have used the opportunity to experiment and become confident in the hand-rendered techniques I have always wanted to try such as screen-printing etc. before I begin the third year rather than just relying on digital software to produce my final outcomes.
