PRE-APOCALYPSE
Maya Calendar:
The Maya calendar consists of three separate, corresponding calendars; the Long Count, the Tzolkin (Divine calendar) and the Haab (Civil calendar). In the calendar is cyclical and a set number of days must occur before a new cycle can begin. The three calendars are used simultaneously. The Tzolkin and Haab identify and name the days, but not the years. When displayed the long count calendar comes first, then the Tzolkin date and finally the Haab date.
E.g. A typical Mayan date would read: 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahau 8 Kumku - Where the 13.0.0.0.0 is the Long Count date, the 4 Ahau is the Tzolkin date and the 8 Kumku is the Haab date.
The system of calendars is used in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and in many modern communities in highland Guatemala and in Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico.
The Maya:
The Maya kept historical records such as civil events and their calendric and astronomical knowledge. They maintain a distinctive set of traditions and beliefs due to the combination of pre-columbian and post-conquest ideas and cultures.
The Maya and their descendants still form sizeable population that include regions encompassing present day Guatemala, Belize Honduras, El Salvador and parts of Mexico.

The 2012 Phenomenon:
The 2012 phenomenon is comprised from a range of eschatological beliefs according to which cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on 21st December 2012. This date is regarded as the end - date of a 5125 - year - long cycle in the Mesoamerica long count calendar. Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae have been proposed as pertaining to this date, though none have been accepted by mainstream scholarship.
A new age interpretation of this transition is that the date marks the start of time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation and 21st December marks the 'new era'.
