OUGD404 : Design Principles - The Anatomy of Type Part 1/2

During the first studio session as part of the Design Principles module, we focused on type specifically how type works and what typography is.
We were asked in a groups of seven to, separate the five typefaces we had collected into five different of our choice. Our Group chose; Serif (heavy type weight), Serif (light type weight), Sans Serif (heavy type weight), Sans Serif (light type weight) and Decorative

We were then asked to separate the examples into categories of production which are; stone, sabel, bone, wood, lead, silicone. Each of these five categories had a fundamental impact on the development on type.

Stone - Traditional, sophisticated
Sabel - Gothic, fluid
Bone - Feminine, Posh
- These methods of production are classic and pre-industrial.
Wood - Curved, Modern
Lead - Bold, Fragile, Minimal
Silicone - Simplistic, Dense
-These methods of production are modern and post-industrial

- Categories : Stone, Sabel and Bone

- Categories : Wood and Lead

- Categories : Silicone

We were then asked to move tables and collect another member of the groups five typefaces. For next week we are required to, using the 'fonts by appearance' section on the Identifont website to identify each typeface, then choose one of the typefaces and become an 'expert' on it by researching into where it has been used, how much it costs and its history etc.
