OUGD405: Design Process - End of Module Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout the Design Process module, I believe I have developed skills particularly in communication, as this was a main aspect of the 'Research, Collect, Communicate' brief. Although I feel my communication skills could still improve, this brief required us to communicate what we had learned through the collection of research material an our approach/ideas to the set brief in a series of progress and final crits which I believe has improved my confidence.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

As the Design Process Module was primarily research driven, I was able to develop my skills in the collect of research from a range of sources (internet, films, books, newspapers etc.) which was a particular aim I set myself from the Design Skills module. Producing in depth research on a given topic enabled me to produce informed initial ideas faster and therefore gave me more time to produce the final outcomes.

3. What Strengths can can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

Within my work for the Design Process module, I believe my strengths have been in
using hand-rendered rather digital techniques as I feel I am more confident in this area, therefore when producing outcomes for the Design Process I tended to use these techniques. However, as I still wanted to develop my skills in this area during the module I used it as an opportunity to try new hand-rendered techniques I have never used before such as Lino Print.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in future?

In my work, I believe my weaknesses have been in the quality of the work I have produced as I feel particularly my final outcomes for the 'Research, Collect, Communicate' brief could have had a more professional, clean finish to them. Therefore, in future I will manage my time to give myself more time to develop and produce my final ideas rather than producing initial ideas.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1. Improve time management skills: On a couple of the briefs I felt rushed to meet the deadline  - By managing my time I will be able to complete my work to a high standard without feeling rushed.
2.Improve quality of -some- of my final designs which have been rushed to meet deadlines - Although I am happy with all the outcomes I have produced for the briefs as part of the Design Process module I feel the quality of some outcomes particularly for the posters for the 'Research, Collect, Communicate: Product' module could of had a more professional finish.
3. Keep a more thorough documentation on my blog: I believe throughout the design module I have not kept as up to date with my blog in relation to annotating the process of my design from initial idea to final outcome - By annotating this process as I go along I will have more thorough documentation on my blog.
4. Improve Skills in Digital Media - As I am more confident in using hand-rendered techniques I tend to use these processes to produce my final designs, however I would like to be as confident within digital media as hand rendered as I believe this will give my designs a more professional finish.
5. Consider different outcomes for my designs - For both the 'How To...' and the 'Research, Collect, Communicate: Product'  I produced posters as the final outcomes, although I feel this was appropriate for the concept next time I would like to possibly use a more creative concept for the outcomes of the briefs.

6. How would you grade yourself on the following areas?

  • Attendance - 5 = Excellent
  • Punctuality - 5 = Excellent
  • Motivation - 4 = Very Good
  • Commitment - 4 = Very Good
  • Quantity of work produced - 4 = Very Good
  • Quality of work produced - 3 = Good
  • Contribution to the group - 3 = Good
