During the first week of the three week brief we are required to devise an initial concept proposal which will need to identify the context and environment in which the response will be delivered.
We are also required to select an appropriate method of communication by identifying, analysing and using existing means of distribution.
OUR TASK: 5 - A- DAY
As a starting point for the brief, we created a spider diagram relating to the subject of 5 - A - DAY and the healthy lifestyles.
- 5 - A - DAY is the name for a number of programmes in the USA, UK and Germany which encourage the consumption of at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. This advice came from the recommendation by the World Health Organisation that individuals should consume 400g of vegetables everyday.
- 5 - A - DAY was introduced to the UK in 2002/2003 by the UK Department of Health. However 10 years after it was introduced, research suggests that few members of the population are meeting the target.
- It has been suggested by the government that the consumption of at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day reduces the risk of some cancers and heart disease
However, we felt this was quite an obvious response to the task we were given and started to think of the term more literally, for example other things that we do five times a day. One of the suggestions made was Social Media sites such as; Facebook, Twitter and Instagram which we all agreed we used at least five times a day.
We then discussed and brain-stormed in our group all the social media websites we knew and have used, the things the sites are used for and finally a list of positives and negatives for each site.
As the emphasis of the brief was on the response given, we decided not to get hung up on one idea straight away and instead investigate into social media in general and then decide on the concept.
- Four billion pieces of content are shared everyday by 845 million users
- "Viral silence may have as many dangers as viral noise"
- Twitter, Facebook and Blackberry Messenger were a key tool for the rioters
- Rioters were aided by the existence of social media
PRIMARY RESEARCH
For our primary research, each member of the group was asked to make a list of all the social media they use and make a tally of how many times we use/check it on one given day (Tuesday 19th February).
We also planned to give up these social medias completely as a experiment to see how dependant we are on social media. However our experiment was immediately flawed as we would need to use blogger and email to keep up with Uni work and news.
What is the concept?
We will design and produce a app and website which will aim to reduce the users addiction with the social media website, Facebook. The app will achieve this by monitoring how often the user uses Facebook and intend to reduce it by five each day for the first week.
What is the context?
In reference to a person's daily diet each day the term '5 - A - DAY' means to increase your intake of fruit and veg each day to create a healthier lifestyle.
This idea can to relate our concept which aims to reduce the amount of time a student uses Facebook - an average of 23 times a day - as constantly staring at a computer screen could be thought of as an unhealthy lifestyle.
What is the method of delivery?
We will use a app to monitor the amount of time the user uses Facebook and then encourage them to reduce this amount. The app will also link in with a website and Facebook which will post embarrassing photos as punishment, encouraging status' as a reward and will advertise the app.
Once we had defined our concept, context and method of delivery decided upon several areas of research and divided these amongst ourselves to research.
INTERNET ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES
To promote the service that the app and website will be providing we will also design a internet advertisement. We decided, as a group that creating a advertisement for the social media website Facebook would be the most appropriate placement as the app and website are targeted at the same audience as Facebook, students.
I therefore gathered research into internet advertising techniques, the placement of ads on websites and the sizes used. I started by collecting examples from Facebook and Youtube, as these social media websites are the two of the main leaders in internet advertising.
- Each user worth about $100 to Facebook
- Facebook makes the majority of its money by selling advertisements on the website
- In 2011, 85% of its revenue came from advertising
YouTube
- Google which owns YouTube, makes 96% of its revenue from advertising
- Google takes money from advertisers for higher search rankings
Initial Ideas
We were then able to use the research we had to start the idea generation process. We began by specifically generating ideas for possible names for the app as we agreed this was an important decision which could also influence the overall aesthetic of the app.
We also jotted down any possible applications the app would include which we then included in design web of the order in which the app would appear to the viewer, as well as helping us to visualise our initial ideas it also gave us a better idea of how the audience would interact with the app.
