PRODUCTION PROCESS

Mass Production
Mass production is the manufacturing process of large quantities of similar products efficiently, often utilising some sort of mechanisation such as an assembly line in order to achieve high volume, detailed organisation of materials flow, careful control of quality standards and division of labour.

The term 'Mass Production' implies a mass audience, which is something the designer will need to take into consideration when making their design decisions.

One of the cons of the mass production process is that it is inflexible due to it being difficult to alter a design or production process after a production is implemented which is another thing the designer will need to take into consideration.

Short-Run Production

Short Run production refers to the conceptual time period in which some of the factors within the production process are variable in amount and can be changed, however at least one factor of the production is fixed in amount as there is not enough time change all.

Three changes which could occur with short-run production are; increase in production, decrease in production or shut down of production.

The costs within short run production are commonly fixed, with only variable costs and revenues affecting short run profits.

Bespoke Production

Bespoke production describes a high degree of "customisation" with specially made production usually being used within the manufacturing process. The is usually an involvement by the end user in the production of the goods.
