OUGD503: Responsive, Design Process 2 - Collaborative Brief: Bear, Research

To begin he design process for the Bear brief which both me and Charlie had chose to apply to for Collaborative Practice we decided to produce a body of appropriate research will inform the design decisions we will make for the brief.

We decided upon four areas of research; The Brand 'Bear', Target Audience, Other Competitors and Design Inspiration. We then split these categories so we were doing two each, I got Target Audience and Design Inspiration.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The brief it's self is quite vague about the target audience for the final products, therefore to aide this I used the initial questions I had answered for previous responsive briefs.

Who is Your Audience?

The primary target audience is young children who would be drawn into the unique concept and 'fun' of the brand / product however as it will in fact be the parents who will be buying the product it will also be aimed at health conscious parents who want their child / children to eat something healthy in the morning.

Who Should Your Audience Be?

I believe an interesting and appropriate target audience to target the product and design at would be children (both girls and boys) from the age of 4 onwards who are just about to start school for the first time. For young children starting school is a big adventure which encompasses the brand ethos.

Who Could Your Target Audience Be?

Theoretically the target audience could be any child from the reading age onwards who has a keen interest in learning something new.

What Do They Do?
  • Go to school
  • Play make-believe games
  • Have imaginary friends
  • They draw
  • They play outside in the garden
  • They play with their friends
  • They build dens
  • They make a mess
Where Do They Go?
  • To school
  • The park
  • Swimming
  • To their friends birthday parties
  • Their various hobbies; football, ballet etc.
Who Do They Live With?
  • Parents?
  • Step-parents?
  • Legal guardians?
  • Carers?
  • Brother(s)?
  • Sisters(s)?
  • A family pet
DESIGN INSPIRATION

Original Bear Illustrations

I began the research for our design inspiration, by looking at the original illustration style used on the original packaging. The illustrations are quite simplistic which is a style I believe we should continue within our designs as it would be more appropriate and appealing to children.

James Flora

One illustrator whose work I particularly admire is James Flora. The style of his illustrations are quite unusual and almost 'disjointed' which makes them more unique which would fit in with the brand aesthetic of Bear.

As well as James Flora, I also collected examples from other illustrators whose work had been directly inspired by his work in order to have a range of examples to show Charlie.

Derek Yaniger

Pete Docter

J.D King

Michael Bartalos

Saul Bass

PRIMARY RESEARCH

For our primary research for the brief Charlie began looking at the distribution of not only the 'Alphabites' but other products of the Bear brand and how they appeared on supermarket shelves.

We also decided to try the product ourselves conducting our own tasting and discussion of the 'Alphabites' cereal.
